Ultrasound
What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging modality that utilizes high frequency
sound waves to obtain a medical image of various organs and tissues within
the body. It is a painless procedure and produces very precise images of
soft tissue. Ultrasound techniques also demonstrate internal motion such
as heart rate and blood flow. Because there are no known biological effects
of ultrasound, we can also examine the health and well being of the unborn
fetus quite effectively.
How does it work?
The sonographer will ask you to lie on an examination table. A warm gel will
be applied to the specific area of your body to be examined. A hand held probe or
"transducer" will be used by the sonographer and gently moved over the area to
be visualized. The transducer sends sound waves through the body and analyzes the velocity
of the returning "echoes". This information is fed into a computer which
compiles the echoes to formulate an image on the screen for the radiologist to review.
Do I need to prepare?
Studies involving pelvic organs or pregnancies need to be done on patients with full
bladders. You will be asked to drink 32 to 48 ounces of water one hour prior to the
procedure.
Studies of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and aorta require that you refrain from
eating or drinking at least 8 hours prior to the procedure.
As a reminder:
- Avoid carbonated soft drinks. Carbonation contains bubbles that can interfere with the
image.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Follow all instructions received prior to your visit.
- Please check with our office for specific instructions prior to your scheduled visit.
After your ultrasound study you may dress and leave. The radiologist will review the
ultrasound study and send a report to your physician who will provide you with the
results.
